'One Piece' manga beats 'Harry Potter' sets a record for the largest first-edition print run
Three million copies were printed of the first edition of the 57th volume of the "One Piece" comic book series, which goes on sale Thursday, publisher Shueisha Inc. announced.
The figure sets a record for the largest first-edition print run in Japan's publishing industry, exceeding not only the series' 56th edition but also the previous record of 2.9 million copies set for the Japanese translation of "Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix" in 2004, the publisher said.
"One Piece," authored by Eiichiro Oda, has been carried in the weekly comic "Shonen Jump" since 1997.
In total, 185.6 million copies have been printed for all volumes of the popular comic book series, including the 57th, Shueisha added.
